Gonzo, Nick and Parv started the Unplanned journey as three good mates. Surprisingly, after spending many months sharing rooms and fajitas on the road together they remain mates. Not only are they the hosts of Unplanned America, but they also take most roles in the crew – writing, producing, directing, shooting (with DOP Tim Seller) and editing the whole damn thing.
Tim ‘Gonzo’ Ryan got his start in the business working as a producer at MTV Australia then further honed his skills as a producer, writer, director and editor while freelancing at several major Australian networks.
Combining his passion for traveling and a love of Louis Theroux-style anthropological documentaries Gonzo decided the sure-fire way to get some momentum behind a project of his own was to just hit the road and start filming. With that realisation, Unplanned America was born.
As a host, Gonzo’s irreverent approach provides a humorous take on the intriguing worlds the boys encounter on their travels.
Nick Maher is a self-taught film maker who started directing music videos as a youngster in 1998. He produced his first music TV show for Western Australian community television shortly after that and hasn't stopped since. He is now a seasoned professional producer, director and writer, making unique content all over the world.
Over the years Nick has lived and worked in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Berlin and as a traveller with a creative mind he uses his work as an excuse to explore the true culture of wherever he finds himself. When invited by the other boys to go on the Unplanned America adventure, he jumped at the chance to contribute to a project which combined everything he loved about travelling and production.
Nick fancies himself as a bit of an amateur anthropologist, passionate about history and society, and this comes across on-screen as he delves deeply to uncover the stories of the people and places the guys visit.
Pawel ‘Parv’ Jarecki cut his production teeth in the surfing world before moving on to a full-time position at MTV Australia. From there he entered the freelance production world working for the International Olympic Committee, MTV International and a plethora of Australian networks.
When Gonzo revealed his plan of hitting the USA, Parv jumped on board without hesitation. It helped that he didn't have a job anyway. He lived in a tent for 6 months in Sydney's inner west, scraping together every dollar for the upcoming adventure. When the time came he bought his ticket, rolled up his humble home, and dived head first into Unplanned America.
As a host, Parv’s laid back and inquisitive nature allows his subjects to get comfortable, opening up to share their often weird worlds.
