Unplanned America is the show about three Australians who throw away the itinerary and find themselves in the most weird, wonderful, intimidating and inspiring societies that the land of the free has to offer.
Unplanned America sees three adventurous Australians throw out the travel books and hit the highways of the USA armed with a camera and open minds. Whether chasing up a lead from a local friend or going beyond the headlines of bizarre news stories, the trio find themselves in a variety of secretive and unique worlds.
From going on night patrol with real life superheroes in Seattle to exploring the crumbling metropolis of Detroit; changing the ice on a cryogenically frozen corpse in a Colorado mountain hut or uncovering the gay underground ballroom scene of New York City, traveling through the unplanned heart of America has never been so enlightening.
This time around the boys explore the infamous Portland Strip club world; blaze a trail through Colorado with marijuana advocates; get disciplined at the world’s oldest bondage chateau; have permanent reminders etched on their skin as they delve into Southern California’s tattoo culture; throw their own New Orleans street parade and a whole lot more…..
This time around the boys fear for their lives when they go on psychedelic voyage with a cannabis shaman in Colorado; go off the-the-grid at anarchist skate commune Skatopia; spend time with internet sex workers while exploring cam girl culture; partake in not one but two New Orleans Voodoo ceremonies; experience the blood, sweat and beers of the World Beer Pong Championship, get a lesson in the second amendment from the Texas Militia and a whole lot more…..
History of the Production
Gonzo, Parv and Nick packed their bags and trusty camera and headed to the States in the search of the unknown.
On a shoestring budget, funded by the three producers themselves, they travelled for six months throughout the USA, driving through more than 35 states and clocking up more than 20,000 miles on the odometer.
They filmed gripping stories all over the vast expanse of the country in places as varied as the mountains of Colorado, the Californian desert, Detroit’s urban wasteland, islands off the southern tip of Texas, New Mexico border towns, the rainy city of Seattle, the mean streets of south Chicago and under the bright lights of NYC.
As the journey went on and finances were stretched, Unplanned America turned to crowd-funding website Pozible to raise funds to complete the production, raising an unexpected $9,000 from 125 personal investors.
It couldn’t have come at a better time – the day after the money came through, the car’s engine died and had to be replaced using a large chunk of that money. If it wasn’t for crowd-funding they may very well still be stuck in Colorado – presumably on the run from the Sherriff.
After a gruelling year of hustling, the first season was finally sold to SBS – an Australian national broadcaster who also paid in advance for a second and third series. Still low budget but higher in production values, these were created in 2015/16 and all three are now on Netflix worldwide.
